Two large washers with big enough holes to go past the threaded part of the stud on either side of the fixed arm, one large spring washer to hold everything in tension but allow for some 'float', one smaller washer to hold spring in place and a (very shiny) nylock nut to hold it all together (hopefully permanently) and it's working fine. Happiness once again...
